Cool Lake Arrowhead Sevice School

CLASS is focused on creating safe and meaningful experiences for kids to become capable, connected humans in secure relationship with land, self, and community. Risky Play

Children learn through doing. Trying, failing, and figuring out what works. Risky plays helps students learn to assess and mitigate risks. Natural consequences provide valuable information to students as well as provides opportunities to build resilience and emotional intelligence.

2

Place-Based Learning

A student-centered approach to instruction that immerses students in a non-classroom environment—such as a park, museum, or outdoor landscape—and uses the experience as the foundation for lessons. Students develop a sense of place, and tangible access to their community and ecosystem.

3

Meaningful Learning Experiences

Students will engage with their local community and environment in ways that will show students tangible access points to learn or influence the world around them. This can be accessing local public lands for learning and recreation, or reaching out to local businesses or authorities to encourage change.

4

Non-Violent Communication

Our language is powerful, and at CLASS we strive to use language to connect people rather than shame or blame others. NVC is a language that focuses on needs as gifts, and how to authentically express and meet those needs. This style of connecting and communicating is not how society has taught most of us, and we strive to use CLASS as a place to safely learn and practice this language.
